On July 7, Anthropic expanded Claude Cowork from desktop-only to web and mobile. On July 9, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work alongside the GPT-5.6 model family. Launched July 9 alongside GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna, ChatGPT Work is OpenAI’s bet that the future of AI is making things for you. Its core philosophy: you describe what you need, and the agent produces a finished file — spreadsheet with formulas, formatted slide deck, long-form document, or even a functional web app or site.
What We Liked
The quality of finished deliverables is unmatched. We asked both platforms to “build a Q3 financial model with revenue projections, expense categories, and a sensitivity analysis.” ChatGPT Work produced an Excel-compatible .xlsx with working SUMIFS formulas, conditional formatting, and a data table. Claude Cowork returned a written analysis with a static table. ChatGPT Work wins on output quality for any task where the end result is a file.
The “Sites” feature is genuinely new. ChatGPT Work can turn any work output into a shareable web app or interactive site. We asked it to build a competitive analysis dashboard from 10 data points — it produced a working, filterable HTML dashboard hosted at a shareable URL in under 5 minutes. Nothing else in this category does this.
Free access to GPT-5.6 Terra on desktop is a power move. Free users get ChatGPT Work with GPT-5.6 Terra via the desktop app. That’s a frontier-grade AI agent for zero dollars. Claude Cowork requires at least a $20/mo Pro subscription. If you’re curious about the category, there’s no reason not to start with ChatGPT Work.
Ultra mode (4 parallel agents) is a genuine multiplier. For complex tasks like “research our top 10 competitors, extract their pricing, build a comparison table, and draft a go-to-market memo,” Ultra mode dispatched four sub-agents in parallel and returned the complete package in 12 minutes. The same task in Claude Cowork took 38 minutes sequentially.
Scheduled tasks that keep working after you close your laptop. You can set up recurring work — “every Monday at 8am, pull sales data and update the team dashboard” — and ChatGPT Work executes it even when your device is offline. This is table stakes for the category, but OpenAI’s implementation is smooth and the task history is searchable.
Cheaper across every paid tier. At $20/mo for Plus, you get access to GPT-5.6 Sol, Ultra mode, and all Work features. Claude Cowork’s Max 5x plan is $100/mo. For heavy users, ChatGPT Work is dramatically more affordable.
What We Didn’t
ChatGPT Work cannot send emails, manage your calendar, or edit files in your existing tools. This is the single biggest limitation. You can ask it to “draft an email to the VP of Sales about Q3 priorities” and it will write a great draft — but you have to copy, paste, and send it yourself. Claude Cowork will draft AND send it from your Outlook with your signature.
Codex rate limits are real. Heavy users will hit them. We uploaded a 50MB CSV and asked for a complex multi-sheet analysis — ChatGPT Work hit rate limits twice during a single session. Claude Cowork was more lenient on heavy compute jobs.
Rolling out to Plus/Business “over the coming days.” As of writing, the full ChatGPT Work experience is on Pro, Enterprise, and Edu first. Plus and Business users may be waiting a few days for mobile and web access.
Less transparent about security posture. ChatGPT Work operates by making things and handing them to you — which means fewer permissions to audit, but also less clarity on what the agent actually did. IT admins will have a harder time auditing what employees had the AI generate versus Claude Cowork’s detailed approval logs.
The Verdict
ChatGPT Work is the best choice if your primary need is producing finished documents, spreadsheets, analyses, and web apps. The free tier alone makes it worth downloading the desktop app. Upgrade to Plus ($20/mo) for Sol access and Ultra mode.
Claude Cowork: The In-Tool Operator
Claude Cowork launched on desktop in January 2026, reached general availability on April 9, and expanded to web and mobile on July 7. Its philosophy is fundamentally different from ChatGPT Work: instead of making things and handing them to you, Cowork acts inside your real tools. It sends emails from your Outlook. It creates events on your calendar. It edits SharePoint files. It reconciles spreadsheets in place.
What We Liked
Actually works inside Microsoft 365. This is the killer feature. Claude Cowork is the only AI agent that can, with admin consent, send email on your behalf, manage your calendar, sort your inbox, and edit SharePoint files. We tested it with: “Send an email to Acme Corp’s procurement team declining their discount request but proposing a volume-based alternative. Reference the Q2 volume report in SharePoint.” Cowork drafted, sent, and logged the email — with proper attribution. ChatGPT Work can’t do any of this.
Approval gates build real trust. Before every potentially destructive action — sending an email, deleting a file, creating a calendar event — Claude Cowork shows a preview and asks for confirmation. This sounds slow in theory. In practice, it prevents the kind of “AI sent a weird email to the CEO” disaster that kills enterprise adoption. The approval gate is configurable per action type.
SWE-Bench Pro at 80.3% is the coding benchmark to beat. For software engineering tasks, Claude’s Mythos 5 model scores 80.3% on SWE-Bench Pro versus GPT-5.6 Sol’s 64.6%. If you’re a developer, Claude Cowork (with bundled Claude Code) is the better coding partner. However, it’s also 3x more expensive per task on CursorBench ($17.32 vs $5.22).
Mid-task steering works exactly as advertised. With ChatGPT Work, if you realize mid-generation that the output is going in the wrong direction, you usually have to cancel and restart. Claude Cowork lets you interrupt, redirect, and continue without losing progress. We tested this three times — it saved 15-20 minutes per session compared to restarting.
Scheduled tasks run even without any device online. You can schedule “every Monday at 6am, pull Salesforce deal data into a weekly client prep report” and Claude Cowork executes on Anthropic’s servers, not your local machine. OpenAI’s scheduled tasks also run offline, but Claude’s implementation is more mature (shipped in April vs OpenAI’s July launch).
Curated bundles for specific professions. The Plugin Marketplace offers curated bundles for Legal, Small Business, Marketing Ops, and Financial Services. Each includes pre-configured MCP connectors (DocuSign, HubSpot, QuickBooks, NetDocuments) plus prompt templates. A lawyer can start with the Legal bundle and immediately have tools for contract analysis, document management, and compliance checks. ChatGPT Work’s Plugins Directory is broader (Slack, Teams, Google Drive, Notion) but less curated.
What We Didn’t
No free tier, and the pricing is aggressive. Claude Cowork starts at $20/mo for Pro. The Max plan (required for full Cowork features on mobile/web) is $100/mo. Heavy users report that a single slide deck can cost approximately $45 in usage, and one 5-hour session can consume about 15% of the weekly limit. The usage anxiety is real.
Benchmarks tell a mixed story outside of coding. Claude’s Agents’ Last Exam score of 45.2% (Opus 4.8) versus ChatGPT Work’s 52.7% (GPT-5.6 Sol) suggests it struggles more with complex multi-domain reasoning. OSWorld 2.0: 54.8% vs 62.6%. Claude wins on software engineering (80.3% vs 64.6%) but loses on most other metrics.
No image generation. Claude Cowork does not generate images — that’s a separate product (Claude Design). ChatGPT Work can generate decent images inline. Not a dealbreaker, but worth noting if visual assets are part of your workflow.
Data residency: US only at launch. European customers may face data sovereignty challenges. OpenAI offers EU data residency for ChatGPT Work on Enterprise plans. Claude Cowork has announced international data centers but hasn’t shipped them yet.
Mobile/web launched only on Max plan first. The July 7 web and mobile expansion started exclusively on the Max 5x plan ($100/mo). Other plans get access “in the coming weeks.” If you’re on the Pro plan, you’re desktop-only for now.
MCP Atlas benchmark dominance (83.6%) doesn’t match real-world experience. Claude tops the agentic tool-use benchmark, but in our tests, the gap was narrower. ChatGPT Work’s Plugins Directory was faster to set up, even if Claude’s MCP connectors offer deeper integrations once configured.
