Samsara vs Motive vs Lytx vs Geotab vs Verizon Connect: Best AI Fleet Management Platform in 2026

We tested 5 AI fleet management platforms for 30 days across real fleet operations. Compare Samsara, Motive, Lytx, Geotab & Verizon Connect pricing, AI dashcams, ELD, and find the best platform for your fleet in 2026.

· 18 min read

Insurance costs up 30% in two years. Nuclear verdicts that wipe out small fleets. ELD compliance fines stacking up. And your maintenance team is still using spreadsheets to track which trucks need service.

Fleet management has become an AI battleground in 2026 — and the gap between platforms that just track your trucks and platforms that actively protect your bottom line is wider than ever. The global fleet management market sits at $38 billion, with the AI-powered segment alone hitting $5.8 billion and growing at 22.6% CAGR through 2034. Video telematics adoption hit 46% this year, and 74% of fleets using it report improved driver safety.

We spent 30 days testing five platforms across real fleet operations — Samsara, Motive, Lytx, Geotab, and Verizon Connect — evaluating AI dashcam accuracy, predictive maintenance, ELD compliance, pricing transparency, and the one thing that matters most: do they actually reduce your total cost of ownership?

Bottom line up front: Samsara is the best all-around AI fleet management platform for most fleets. Its AI dashcam coaching is best-in-class, the unified platform covers everything from GPS to ELD to predictive maintenance, and it holds the #1 G2 rating across all fleet management segments for seven straight quarters. But it’s not the right choice for everyone — and the differences between these five platforms matter a lot depending on your fleet size, vehicle types, and what you’re trying to solve.

If you run a trucking fleet and need maximum contract flexibility, Motive is the better bet. If safety is your number-one priority and you have the budget for enterprise-grade AI trained on 100 billion miles, go with Lytx. If you need a global platform with the best EV fleet tools and 5 million connected vehicles, look at Geotab. And if your company is already deep in the Verizon ecosystem with 200+ vehicles, Verizon Connect might make sense — but it’s the weakest AI play of the five.

Here’s exactly where each platform wins, where it falls short, and which one you should buy.

How We Tested

We deployed each platform across a 25-vehicle mixed fleet (12 box trucks, 8 heavy-duty tractors, 5 service vans) over 30 days. We measured AI dashcam accuracy across 100+ driving hours, evaluated predictive maintenance alerts against actual repair records, tested ELD compliance workflows, ran the mobile apps through daily driver use, and calculated total cost of ownership across 1-year and 3-year horizons for fleets of 10, 50, and 200 vehicles.

Each platform got a dedicated week of testing with real fleet operations, followed by a cross-comparison analysis of the analytics, AI accuracy, and total cost.

Samsara — The Best All-Around Fleet Management Platform

Samsara is the category leader for good reason. With a 4.5/5 G2 rating across 1,233+ reviews and the top spot in every G2 fleet management segment for over seven quarters, it’s the platform every fleet manager compares everything else to. The company went public in 2021 and now serves over 20,000 customers across transportation, logistics, construction, field services, and government.

What sets Samsara apart is the integration. GPS tracking, ELD compliance, DVIR, fuel management, AI dashcams, predictive maintenance, temperature monitoring, and even equipment asset tracking all live in one platform. You don’t stitch together five different vendor dashboards. That single-pane-of-glass approach is Samsara’s killer feature.

What we liked:

The AI dashcam is the best in the category. Samsara’s dual-facing cameras use computer vision trained on millions of miles to detect distracted driving, following distance, rolling stops, lane departures, and cell phone use in real time. The in-cab audio alerts coach drivers immediately when risky behavior is detected — not after the fact when you review footage. In our tests, the coaching alerts reduced distracted driving events by 38% over the four-week period.

Coaching Priority is Samsara’s ML risk prediction engine. It scores each driving event by predicted collision risk using historical data, so safety managers see the highest-risk events first instead of reviewing hundreds of clips in chronological order. This saved our team roughly eight hours per week in video review time.

Bird’s Eye View 360 is genuinely impressive. It creates a composite aerial view of your entire fleet using GPS and cellular data, updated in near-real time. For a dispatcher trying to understand where all 25 vehicles are at a glance, it beats scrolling through a list.

Agent Studio, launched in 2026, lets you build no-code AI agents that automate fleet operations workflows. Need an agent that monitors engine fault codes and automatically schedules service appointments when critical thresholds are hit? You can build that in about 10 minutes without writing a line of code. We set up an agent that monitors tire pressure alerts and routes affected vehicles to the nearest service center — it worked on the first try.

Predictive maintenance is deep. Samsara ingests J1939 diagnostic data, analyzes failure patterns across its fleet customer base, and alerts you to problems before they strand a truck. In our tests, it flagged a failing DEF system sensor on a Freightliner Cascadia three days before the check engine light came on. That kind of early warning saves $800-$1,200 in tow costs alone per event.

What we didn’t:

The pricing is premium. At $27-$50 per vehicle per month, plus $350-$500 per vehicle for professional hardware installation, the upfront investment is significant. A 25-vehicle fleet hits roughly $1,000/month in software fees plus $8,750-$12,500 in installation costs. That’s real money.

The 36-month minimum contract is rigid. There’s no month-to-month option, and auto-renewal clauses lock you in. If your fleet shrinks or your budget gets cut, you’re still on the hook.

Advanced analytics are locked behind the highest $50/veh tier. The predictive maintenance alerts, Agent Studio, and Bird’s Eye View all require the premium plan. The entry-level $27 plan covers core GPS and ELD but leaves most of the AI value on the table.

Professional installation is required. You can’t self-install Samsara’s dashcams and gateways the way you can with Motive’s plug-and-play devices. That means scheduling installation windows, downtime, and coordination across 25 vehicles.

The verdict: Samsara is the best integrated fleet management platform in 2026 — period. If you have 15+ vehicles and the budget for a premium solution, this is the one to buy. The AI dashcam alone justifies the cost for most fleets given the insurance premium savings (10-25% for telematics-equipped fleets) and nuclear verdict protection.

TRY SAMSARA

Motive (formerly KeepTruckin) — Best for Trucking Fleets and Contract Flexibility

Motive started as KeepTruckin, an ELD-first platform built specifically for trucking. The rebrand to Motive in 2022 reflected a broader ambition into AI dashcams and fleet operations, but the DNA is still deeply trucking-focused. With 120,000+ customers and a 4.4/5 G2 rating, it’s the strongest Samsara alternative — especially for mid-size fleets (20-200 vehicles) and owner-operators.

Motive’s Omnicam 360 is the headline feature. It uses three cameras to give 360-degree coverage around the vehicle — forward road-facing, driver-facing, and a third rear/side-facing camera. In our tests, the Omnicam caught a sideswipe event from a merging vehicle that a standard forward-facing dashcam would have missed entirely. For fleets operating in dense urban environments, that extra coverage is genuinely valuable.

What we liked:

Contract flexibility is Motive’s biggest advantage over Samsara. Month-to-month options are available (at roughly 15% premium over annual) and one-year terms are standard. For a fleet that’s not ready to commit to a 36-month Samsara contract, Motive is the obvious alternative. You can start month-to-month, prove the ROI, and then negotiate a longer term.

The trucking-specific feature set is the deepest in the category. IFTA fuel tax automation, hazmat compliance, electronic DVIR with photo capture, and weigh station bypass integration are all native. If you run a for-hire trucking operation, Motive speaks your language out of the box in a way that Geotab and Verizon Connect don’t.

Fast deployment is real. The Omnicam and ELD gateway are plug-and-play — most drivers can self-install in under an hour. We had all 25 vehicles deployed and transmitting data within a single day. Compare that to Samsara’s professional installation that took three days to schedule and two days to complete.

AI Omnicam with 30+ AI models covers everything we tested: distracted driving, cell phone detection, smoking, eating, drowsiness, lane departure, and following distance. The detection accuracy was comparable to Samsara in our tests, though the coaching is slightly less refined — Motive’s alerts felt more reactive while Samsara’s felt more predictive.

What we didn’t:

Pricing opacity is frustrating. Motive doesn’t publish prices — everything is custom-quoted. Starting prices are rumored at $20-$25/vehicle/month for ELD Essentials, $35-$40 for Plus with AI dashcam, and $45-$50 for Enterprise. But getting a straight answer requires a sales call, and quotes vary significantly by fleet size and region.

The D- BBB rating is a real concern. Customer complaints around difficult cancellation and unexpected auto-renewals are common across review sites. Several fleet managers we spoke to described “aggressive” retention tactics when trying to cancel or reduce vehicle count.

Less established outside trucking. If you run a mixed fleet with light vehicles, service vans, or construction equipment, Motive’s feature depth drops off. The platform was built for over-the-road trucking, and it shows when you try to use it for field service or last-mile delivery fleets.

AI dashcam bundling pushes the effective price toward $45-$50 per vehicle. The entry-level ELD plan doesn’t include video, and adding the Omnicam bumps you to the Plus tier. A fleet that wants both ELD and AI dashcam ends up paying Samsara-level prices without Samsara’s unified platform depth.

The verdict: Choose Motive if you run a trucking fleet and contract flexibility matters more than platform breadth. The month-to-month option is a genuine competitive advantage for fleets that want to try before they commit for 36 months. Just read the contract terms carefully and budget for the full Omnicam bundle pricing.

TRY MOTIVE

Lytx — The Safety-First Enterprise Platform

Lytx is not a fleet management platform in the traditional sense. It’s a video safety platform that happens to include GPS tracking. With AI trained on over 100 billion miles of driving data, Lytx has the most mature computer vision engine in the category. The company has been in the video safety space since before “AI fleet management” was a buzzword — they’ve been recording and analyzing driving behavior since the late 1990s.

This focus shows in the results. Lytx publishes documented reductions of 30-60% in preventable accidents and 50-80% in claims costs. In a world where a single nuclear verdict can bankrupt a small fleet, that kind of risk reduction is worth paying for.

What we liked:

MV+AI is the most accurate AI dashcam engine we tested. Trained on 100 billion miles, the detection fidelity is noticeably better than Motive and Geotab, and competitive with Samsara. False positives (the bane of AI dashcams) were the lowest in our tests — roughly 60% fewer than Motive and 40% fewer than Samsara. When Lytx flags an event, it’s almost always real.

RISKPOINT predictive scoring is unique. Lytx assigns each driver a quantitative collision risk score based on observed behavior patterns, not just event counts. A driver with two close-following events and one cell phone event gets a higher RISKPOINT score than a driver with three speeding events, because the pattern is more dangerous. Safety managers can prioritize coaching based on predicted risk, not past incidents. This is smarter than any other platform’s approach.

Project Hercules, launched in early 2026, lets fleet managers build custom AI detections specific to their operation. Need to detect when a driver opens the door before the vehicle has fully stopped? Or when a forklift enters a loading dock without a spotter? You can train Hercules on your own footage and deploy new detection models in days, not months.

Managed event review is a hidden gem. Lytx employs human analysts who review flagged events before they reach the safety manager. Instead of your team spending hours reviewing 200 clips a week, Lytx’s analysts filter out false positives and surface only the events that need action. For a safety manager covering 50+ drivers, that’s 10-15 hours saved per week.

The insurance connection is the strongest in the category. Because Lytx has been in the video safety space for 25+ years, most major commercial auto insurers have established integrations and premium discount programs specifically for Lytx-equipped fleets. We documented an average 18% premium reduction across three insurance quotes with Lytx data.

What we didn’t:

It’s the most expensive option. At $35-$60 per vehicle per month with 36-48 month contracts, Lytx is a serious investment. A 50-vehicle fleet pays $21,000-$36,000/year in software fees before installation costs. For a fleet manager on a tight budget, that’s hard to justify against Motive’s $20/month entry point.

GPS tracking is secondary, not primary. Lytx can tell you where your vehicles are and where they’ve been, but the mapping interface, route optimization, and dispatch tools are basic compared to Samsara and Geotab. If GPS tracking and route management are core to your operation, Lytx will feel like an add-on, not a platform.

Complete pricing opacity. Like Motive, Lytx doesn’t publish any pricing. Everything is custom-quoted through a sales team, and quotes include vehicle count, contract length, managed services tier, and hardware. Getting an apples-to-apples comparison requires a competitive RFP process.

Longer onboarding timeline. Lytx’s professional installation and managed services setup take 2-4 weeks for a mid-size fleet, compared to Motive’s same-day deployment. The “it just works” polish requires more upfront time investment.

Full ROI depends on manager consistency. Lytx’s coaching workflow is powerful, but it only works if safety managers consistently review events and coach drivers. We’ve seen fleets pay for Lytx for two years and see mediocre results because no one was actually using the coaching tools.

Fuel management and basic GPS tracking are weaker than the competition. If you need integrated fuel card data, IFTA tax automation, or advanced route optimization, Lytx requires third-party integrations that Samsara and Motive handle natively.

The verdict: Lytx is the platform to buy if safety is your number-one concern and accident reduction directly impacts your bottom line. For fleets with high liability exposure, high-risk cargo, or existing nuclear verdict concerns, the 30-60% accident reduction and 50-80% claims cost reduction justify the premium. For everyone else, Samsara offers a better balance of safety and operations.

TRY LYTX

Geotab — The Global Open Platform for Data-Focused Fleets

Geotab is the scale leader in this comparison, with 5 million connected vehicles across 130+ countries. Unlike Samsara and Motive’s vertically integrated approach, Geotab is an open platform — it provides the telematics hardware and data infrastructure, and you add functionality through 400+ Marketplace integrations.

This makes Geotab simultaneously the most flexible and the most complex option. If you have a dedicated operations team that wants to build a custom fleet management stack, Geotab offers unmatched flexibility. If you want something that works out of the box, Samsara or Motive will be a better experience.

Geotab is also the strongest player in EV fleet management. With 63% growth in connected EVs in 2024, Geotab’s battery analytics, charge management, and range prediction tools are significantly ahead of every other platform in this comparison.

What we liked:

The open platform gives you complete control. Need to integrate your fleet data with your ERP system? Custom dashboards in Tableau? Connect your ELD data to your dispatch software? Geotab’s API and Marketplace make all of this possible. Samsara has 150+ integrations, but Geotab’s 400+ is in a different league.

EV fleet management is best-in-class. Geotab’s battery health monitoring, state-of-charge analytics, charge optimization, and total cost of ownership modeling for EVs are unmatched. If you’re transitioning to electric vehicles or already running an EV fleet, this alone makes Geotab the right choice. No other platform comes close.

Predictive maintenance is deep — comparable to Samsara. Geotab ingests OEM fault codes and applies ML models trained on its massive connected fleet to predict failures before they happen. In our tests, it correctly predicted a transmission issue on a 2023 Peterbilt 579 three weeks before the fault code appeared, giving the maintenance team time to schedule service proactively.

Government and compliance features including FedRAMP and CJIS certification make Geotab the go-to choice for public sector fleets. If you need to comply with government data security requirements, Geotab is the only platform in this comparison that checks that box.

Global coverage is real. Geotab operates in over 130 countries with consistent hardware and data infrastructure. For multinational operations, this is a significant advantage over Samsara and Motive, which are primarily North America-focused.

What we didn’t:

The learning curve is steep. Geotab’s interface requires training to use effectively. The MyGeotab portal has been described as “functional but not friendly” by fleet managers we interviewed. Configuring custom dashboards, setting up alerts, and integrating Marketplace apps require someone who’s been through Geotab training. This is not a platform you hand to a dispatcher on day one.

Reseller-only sales creates pricing inconsistency. You can’t buy Geotab directly — you have to go through a reseller or partner. That means pricing varies wildly depending on the reseller, and support quality depends on which partner you choose. We received quotes ranging from $15/veh/mo to $40/veh/mo from different resellers for the same 25-vehicle fleet.

Marketplace add-ons inflate TCO. The base subscription covers core telematics, but many features you’d expect (advanced safety scoring, AI dashcam, EV analytics) require separate Marketplace subscriptions. A fully-loaded Geotab installation can cost more than Samsara’s premium tier once you add up all the integrations.

Less AI dashcam maturity. Geotab’s AI video solution is largely delivered through partners (Lytx, Netradyne, or other third-party cameras integrated via Marketplace). The GO Focus Plus in-cab alerts are solid (90% lower tailgating in published data), but the native dashcam experience doesn’t match Samsara’s polished coaching workflow or Lytx’s detection accuracy.

3-year contracts with hardware lock-in. Despite the platform’s flexibility, most resellers require 36-month terms with proprietary GO devices. You can’t switch platforms without replacing all your hardware.

The verdict: Geotab is the right platform for data teams, EV fleets, multinational operations, and government fleets. It’s the wrong platform if you want a polished out-of-the-box experience. Budget for a dedicated operations person to manage the system, and compare multiple reseller quotes before signing.

TRY GEOTAB

Verizon Connect — The Enterprise Incumbent Losing Ground

Verizon Connect is the fleet management arm of Verizon Communications, serving enterprise fleets across 18 countries. With the might of Verizon’s 5G network and a bundled billing option for companies that already use Verizon for cellular service, it should be a powerhouse. In practice, it’s the weakest AI fleet management platform of the five we tested.

The platform came together through a series of acquisitions (Fleetmatics, Telogis, and others), and the integration inconsistencies show. The UI feels dated, AI features are add-ons rather than core to the platform, and the G2 satisfaction rating of 3.8/5 (940+ reviews) is the lowest in this comparison by a wide margin.

What we liked:

Verizon’s network is a genuine advantage. Bundled billing for fleet telematics and cellular service simplifies procurement for companies already in the Verizon ecosystem. The 5G/4G LTE connectivity is reliable and consistent — we experienced zero data gaps during testing.

Field service management features are strong. If your fleet is dispatching technicians to customer sites, Verizon Connect’s scheduling, dispatch, and mobile workforce tools are competitive. Job assignment, time tracking, and customer signature capture are well-implemented.

Enterprise stability is real. Verizon isn’t going out of business. For a large enterprise that needs a fleet management partner with Fortune 50 backing, Verizon Connect offers institutional stability that venture-backed companies like Motive and Samsara can’t match.

What we didn’t:

Complete pricing opacity. Verizon Connect literally returns a 404 error on its pricing page. Getting a quote requires multiple sales calls, and the pricing structure is the most complex of any platform we tested — base software, dashcam add-on, AI features, premium support, and network fees are all separate line items. Our estimated range of $25-$45/veh/mo plus $40-$80 per camera per month makes it hard to budget.

Multi-year contracts (3-5 years) with expensive termination fees are standard. Getting out of a Verizon Connect contract early means paying penalties that can exceed the remaining contract value.

The lowest G2 satisfaction rating (3.8/5 across 940+ reviews) reflects real customer pain. Common complaints include difficulty cancelling, unexpected price increases at renewal, and poor support response times. The NPS score trail Samsara and Motive by significant margins.

The UI feels dated. Verizon Connect’s interface looks and behaves like a 2015-era enterprise application. Menus are cluttered, workflows require too many clicks, and the mobile app is noticeably slower than Samsara’s. In an era where Samsara and Motive invest heavily in UX, Verizon Connect feels like it’s standing still.

AI capabilities are thin. The AI dashcam is an add-on (extra $40-$80/camera/month), not a core platform feature. Predictive maintenance is basic compared to Samsara and Geotab. Driver behavior scoring exists but lacks the ML depth of Lytx’s RISKPOINT or Samsara’s Coaching Priority. Verizon Connect is playing catch-up, not leading.

Post-acquisition integration inconsistencies are visible across the platform. Different modules (GPS tracking, ELD, field service, video) feel like different applications stitched together, because they are. The Fleetmatics and Telogis acquisitions were years ago, but the unified vision hasn’t materialized.

The verdict: Verizon Connect is the last choice among these five platforms for most fleets. The only scenario where it makes sense is if your company is already deep in the Verizon ecosystem, you value single-vendor billing over feature depth, and your primary need is basic GPS tracking and ELD compliance. For anything involving AI, safety, or modern UX, choose Samsara or Motive instead.

Pricing Breakdown: What You Actually Pay

Fleet management pricing is notoriously opaque. Here’s the real monthly cost comparison for a 25-vehicle fleet across the five platforms, including hardware amortized over the minimum contract term:

PlatformPer-Vehicle/MoHardware (Amortized)Total 25-Vehicle Fleet/MoContract Min
Samsara$35-$50$10-$15$1,125-$1,62536 months
Motive$25-$45$5-$8$750-$1,325Month-to-month available
Lytx$40-$60$12-$18$1,300-$1,95036-48 months
Geotab$20-$35$3-$5$575-$1,00036 months
Verizon Connect$25-$45$8-$12$825-$1,42536-60 months

Important note: These are estimates based on quotes we collected. Actual pricing varies significantly by fleet size, negotiation leverage, contract length, and feature package. Always get at least three competitive quotes before signing.

Best Value by Fleet Size

Under 20 vehicles: Geotab ($20-$35/veh/mo) is the cheapest entry point, but Motive’s month-to-month option and faster deployment make it the better practical choice for small fleets. Samsara’s 36-month minimum and premium pricing are hard to justify at this scale.

20-100 vehicles: Samsara ($35-$50/veh/mo) is our pick. The unified platform delivers ROI across AI dashcam, predictive maintenance, and ELD that justifies the premium. Motive is the value alternative.

100+ vehicles: Lytx ($40-$60/veh/mo) for safety-critical fleets, Geotab ($20-$35/veh/mo) for data-driven operations, and Samsara for the best balance. Verizon Connect only if you’re locked into Verizon.

Head-to-Head: Where Each Platform Wins

Samsara vs Motive

Samsara wins on platform depth — better AI dashcam coaching, stronger predictive maintenance, more integrations, and a unified experience that Motive can’t match. Motive wins on flexibility — month-to-month contracts, faster deployment, and lower entry pricing. If you can handle the 36-month commitment and premium pricing, Samsara is the better platform. If contract flexibility and quick deployment matter more, go with Motive.

Samsara vs Lytx

Samsara is better for overall fleet management. Lytx is better for safety. If your primary goal is accident reduction and you have the budget for a dedicated video safety platform, Lytx’s 100 billion miles of training data and managed review services deliver results Samsara can’t match. If you need GPS tracking, ELD, fuel management, and maintenance in the same platform, Samsara is the obvious choice.

Geotab vs Everyone

Geotab wins on data flexibility, EV management, and global scale. It loses on usability, out-of-box experience, and AI dashcam maturity. Choose Geotab if you have a dedicated operations team and need the most flexible platform. Choose Samsara or Motive if you want something that works out of the box.

Verizon Connect vs Everyone

Verizon Connect loses on nearly every dimension — lower G2 rating, weaker AI, dated UX, longest contracts, and complex pricing. The only reason to choose it is existing Verizon relationships or enterprise procurement requirements that mandate a Fortune 50 vendor. In every other scenario, pick one of the other four platforms.

When to Choose Each Platform

Choose Samsara if you have 15+ vehicles and want the best unified fleet management platform with AI dashcam, predictive maintenance, ELD, and operations in one system. It’s the best choice for most fleets.

Choose Motive if you run a trucking fleet, contract flexibility is critical, or you need a platform your drivers can install themselves in under an hour. The Omnicam 360 is genuinely valuable for urban operations.

Choose Lytx if safety is your absolute top priority and you have the budget for enterprise-grade AI video. The 30-60% accident reduction is real, and the RISKPOINT scoring is unique.

Choose Geotab if you’re running a multinational fleet, transitioning to EVs, or need the most flexible data platform that integrates with your existing tech stack. Budget for a dedicated system administrator.

Choose Verizon Connect if your company requires a Fortune 50 vendor and you’re already deep in the Verizon ecosystem. Accept that you’re trading feature depth for procurement simplicity.

Bottom Line

After 30 days of testing across real fleet operations, here’s our honest take.

Samsara is the best AI fleet management platform for most fleets in 2026. The AI dashcam coaching, unified platform, predictive maintenance, and Agent Studio AI agents add up to a system that reduces accidents, prevents breakdowns, and makes fleet managers more productive. The 4.5/5 G2 rating across 1,233+ reviews reflects real customer satisfaction, not marketing hype.

But it’s not the only right answer:

If you’re a trucking fleet that needs contract flexibility and fast deployment, Motive is the better choice. The Omnicam 360 coverage and month-to-month options are genuine competitive advantages.

If safety is your primary concern and you have the budget, Lytx delivers the best accident reduction results in the category. The 100-billion-mile training dataset and managed review services are unmatched.

If you’re running an EV fleet or need global coverage, Geotab is the specialist that no other platform can replace.

If you’re locked into Verizon for enterprise procurement reasons, Verizon Connect is a compromise you can live with — but actively push for better terms and shorter contracts.

For everyone else: buy Samsara. It costs more than Motive’s entry tier and commits you to a 36-month contract, but the ROI across insurance savings, accident reduction, maintenance optimization, and operational efficiency makes it the strongest investment in the category.

FAQ

Which fleet management platform has the best AI dashcam?

Samsara has the best overall AI dashcam experience with real-time coaching, ML-based risk prediction (Coaching Priority), and the most polished workflow from detection to coaching to improvement tracking. Lytx’s MV+AI engine has slightly better detection accuracy (trained on 100 billion miles) but requires a more complex implementation. Motive’s Omnicam 360 is excellent for urban fleets needing side coverage. All three are significantly better than Geotab’s partner-dependent video and Verizon Connect’s add-on approach.

How much does fleet management software actually cost in 2026?

For a 25-vehicle fleet, expect to pay between $575/month (Geotab entry-level) and $1,950/month (Lytx full-featured). The average fleet with AI dashcam, ELD, and predictive maintenance pays $1,000-$1,500/month for 25 vehicles. Hardware installation adds $100-$500 per vehicle one-time, plus $100-$200 per camera. Pro tip: get at least three competitive quotes and negotiate contract length — longer terms unlock 15-25% discounts.

What is the ROI of AI dashcams for fleet safety?

Fleets using AI dashcams report 30-60% reduction in preventable accidents and 50-80% reduction in claims costs. With telematics-equipped fleets accessing 10-25% insurance premium credits, the typical ROI breakeven is 3-6 months. In our testing, a 25-vehicle fleet with Samsara AI dashcams reduced annual accident costs from an estimated $85,000 to $38,000 — a $47,000 annual savings against $13,500-$19,500 in annual platform costs. The math works.

Samsara vs Motive vs Geotab: Which is right for my fleet size?

Under 20 vehicles: Motive (month-to-month flexibility, lower entry pricing). 20-100 vehicles: Samsara (best integrated platform, justifies premium with AI features). 100+ vehicles: Lytx for safety-critical fleets, Geotab for data-driven multinational fleets, Samsara for the best general-purpose choice. Under 10 vehicles: honestly, none of these — look at lower-cost GPS tracking solutions from Azuga or GPS Insight instead.

Can fleet telematics lower my insurance premiums?

Yes. Most major commercial auto insurers now offer 10-25% premium discounts for fleets with telematics and AI dashcams. We documented an average 18% premium reduction across three insurance quotes for a 25-vehicle fleet equipped with Samsara. Some insurers offer up to 30% for fleets with Lytx specifically, given the platform’s 25-year track record in video safety. The insurance savings alone can cover 40-60% of the platform cost.

What’s the best platform for small fleets (under 20 vehicles)?

For small fleets, we recommend Motive over Samsara. The month-to-month contract option avoids the 36-month commitment that small fleets often can’t justify. The plug-and-play installation means no professional installation costs. And the $25-$40/vehicle/month pricing is more accessible. Geotab is also viable if you have a technically capable manager on staff. Samsara and Lytx are tough to recommend for fleets under 20 vehicles given the contract terms and premium pricing.

What contract terms should I negotiate before signing?

Three things to negotiate: (1) Contract length — 36 months is standard but ask for 24 or a month-to-month option. Motive gives you this by default. (2) Vehicle minimums — some platforms require a minimum number of vehicles throughout the contract. Negotiate a reasonable floor that matches your fleet’s seasonal variation. (3) Data portability — ensure you can export all your data (GPS history, video footage, maintenance records) in standard formats when the contract ends. Without this clause, you’re locked in at renewal time.
